Library Resources for Michigan Law Students: Quiet Study Spaces

Quiet Study Spaces for Every Occasion

Open Seating In the Sunlight

Just because we're underground, doesn't mean we're in the dark. Refresh yourself in the light let in by the sloping Smith lightwells.

Take our quiz to find your perfect study spot!

What's Your Study Style?

Distractions getting in your way? Study in seclusion in one of the open carrels.

Need to stretch your legs? Use one of the handful of standing tables.

Want to collaborate with your peers? Reserve a group study room in the Reading Room or Lower Commons. During the Pandemic, GSRs are only available for study after 5pm M-F, or anytime on the weekends. All users from 8-5, Monday-Friday must have an appointment or interview scheduled to use a GSR.

Feel like curling up with a book? Relax on a sofa or armchair.

Where Can I Eat?

When you're feeling peckish, there are plenty of places near the Library that welcome food and drink.

  • Lower Commons
  • Upper Commons
  • Kirkland & Ellis Cafe
  • Corridor beneath the Reading Room
  • Benches in the Quad and the Hutchins Courtyard

While food is not allowed in the Underground Library or Reading Room, you are welcome to bring beverages in closed containers.

Did You Know?

The Reading Alcove on Sub-1 is home to our Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion collection, our Avern Cohn Collection, and our Writing Reserves. Curl up on one of the comfy couches and dig into a book that requires no outlining or citations.
