Michigan Legislative History: Finding the Public Act (P.A.) Number

This guide is designed to help you find Michigan legislative documents in the Law Library and elsewhere.

By Subject of the Act

Online

Search Michigan Compiled Laws by keyword on the legislature website. The public act year and number appear at the end in the “history” section. Additionally, “frequently requested” laws are arranged by subject at the following link.

In Print

In print, the Michigan Compiled Laws Annotated includes General Index volumes which arrange statutes by subject. Use these General Index volumes to find the M.C.L.A. citation to relevant statutes. Then, use the M.C.L.A. citation to look up the text of the statute. The public act year and number (e.g., P.A. 1962, No.174, § 2315) appear at the end of the text of the statute.

Public Acts Recently Passed

Recent public acts are available on the Michigan Legislature website.

In print, West publishes a series of pamphlets (6 times per year) of recent public acts called the Michigan Legislative Service. These pamphlets provide the text of new laws in order of public act number with a subject index.

Early Michigan Statutes

There are several indexes available in print or online for early Michigan statutes. The following resources are available in the Law Library or through a Law Library subscription.

By Short or Popular Name of the Act

Online

Search the current Michigan Compiled Laws by popular name or keyword on the Michigan Legislature website.

Search for the name of an act using LexisNexis Academic.

Before you search, click "Search by Subject or Topic," then select "State Statutes and Regulations" in the section "Legal." Use the Advanced Options to select "Statutory Code" and "Michigan" and click "Apply." Now your search will be limited to Michigan statutes.

The Frequently Requested Laws section of the Michigan Legislature website contains the full text of selected acts.

In Print

The Popular Name Table is located in the General index volume of M.C.L.A. Use these General Index volumes to find the M.C.L.A. citation to relevant statutes. Then, use the M.C.L.A. citation to look up the text of the statute. The public act year and number (e.g., P.A. 1962, No.174, § 2315) appear at the end of the text of the statute.

By M.C.L.A. or M.C.L.S. Citation

Look up by citation in Michigan Compiled Laws Annotated or Michigan Compiled Laws Service. The public act year and number (e.g., P.A. 1962, No.174, § 2315) appear at the end of the text of the statute.

By Michigan Statutes Annotated (M.S.A.) Citation

Michigan Statutes Annotated was the name of the annotated Michigan code published by Lexis until 2000. It has been superseded by Lexis's Michigan Compiled Laws Service.

One of the Tables volumes at the end of Michigan Compiled Laws Annotated contains a conversion table from M.S.A. to M.C.L.A. The table will provide the current M.C.L.A. citation. Look up the cited section in the main volumes of M.C.L.A. The public act year and number (e.g., P.A. 1962, No.174, § 2315) appear at the end of the text of the statute.
